The Truth About Unconditional Love

Unconditional love is the concept of giving love freely without restrictions. Some people like to debate about if love can ever truly be "unconditional". Can we honestly give ourselves to another, without conditions? 

First, we need to understand what "love" actually is. In my opinion, love is an emotion, it's energy, it's the only thing in this existence that is perfect. Many people use the words "love" and "relationship" interchangeably, but they are very much different. There can be love present in a relationship, a relationship can be built on love, but love is not a relationship and vice versa. 

When we find ourselves in a relationship with another, sometimes it's as if they can do no wrong in our eyes, even when they do in fact, do wrong. This is where boundaries come into play.

Boundaries are conditions.

Giving our love to another is a beautiful thing, but many of us forget to honor our needs. Before entering a relationship, we should always figure out what our boundaries, deal breakers, and non-negotiables are. This means you must sit with yourself, think about what you want to experience in a relationship, and make sure those are the things that your person (or future person) contributes. Of course, nobody will be perfect, but if your non-negotiable is something like "no hitting each other" then you need to stand firm in that rule. 

So is unconditional love real?

In my honest opinion, I believe unconditional love is self love. Love for yourself should always be unconditional. Radical self acceptance, self forgiveness, setting personal boundaries and being gentle with yourself are all different  forms of self love. Once you realize unconditional love for yourself, it's easier to love others a bit more whole heartedly. 

In order to protect your peace and love for yourself, boundaries must be present. I like to call it your "Laws for self". A country without laws would more than most likely be chaotic. You control chaos with your laws aka boundaries. This does not mean you control people, it just means you are able to recognize who you want in your space and who you don't. 

Furthermore, giving love is the best part of our experience, in my opinion. Let us continue to be love and light.
